The Fourth Wise Man

1985 · Michael Ray Rhodes · Television drama, Christian parable

Recommended. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This small television film turns Matthew 25 into a story: what you do for the least of his brothers, you do for Christ. Artaban spends his treasure and his life on the needy and thinks he has failed. He has not. The one reservation is that the fourth wise man is a legend from an 1895 short story, not from the Gospel.

For parents

A good Advent or Epiphany film for ages seven and up. The massacre at Bethlehem is part of the story, so preview that scene for small children. Say plainly that Artaban is made up. Then read Matthew 25:31-40 together. Ask: who did Artaban help, and who was he really helping?
