The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Recommended. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
Tolkien called his book a fundamentally religious and Catholic work, and Jackson's film keeps that spine. Power is refused rather than seized. Pity spares Gollum. Boromir falls, repents and dies forgiven. Gandalf's magic is the Tolkien kind, a gift used in service, never a ritual to copy. The one reservation: the battle violence is heavy and bloody, which is why the Church classified it for adults.
For parents
The USCCB rated it A-III, Adults, for violence; Common Sense Media says 11+, Decent Films teens and up. Many Catholic families watch it with older children. Ask: why does Gandalf say the smallest person can change the future? Why is Bilbo's pity for Gollum praised? CCC 1808 on fortitude fits Frodo's choice at Rivendell.
