The Mysterious Howling

2010 · Maryrose Wood · Middle-grade comic gothic mystery (The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place, book 1)

Acceptable. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A funny Victorian romp. Penelope, a sensible young governess, treats three wolf-raised children with patience and real affection, and they bloom. Reviewers call it clean and safe, with gentle suspense. The reservation is that this is only book one of a long series with an open mystery, hints of a werewolf plot, and we could not check how later volumes resolve it.

For parents

Read it aloud from 7, and a child can read it alone from about 9, which matches the publisher. Ask how Penelope wins the children over. Ask what it means to treat every person with dignity, even when they act wild. Before handing over later books, a parent should check how the series explains the howling and the family mystery.
