The Quiet Man

1952 · John Ford · Romantic comedy drama

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is a warm, funny love story set in a village where the priest knows everyone and courtship has rules. Sean keeps his temper because he once killed a man in the ring, and the marriage only works when husband and wife each give way. The reservation is real. He drags his wife across the fields for laughs, and the pub drinking never stops.

For parents

Fine for about nine and up with a parent. Say plainly that a husband never handles his wife that way, and that the film plays it as a joke from another time. The priest's kind lie for the vicar is still a lie. Ask: why won't Sean fight? Was Mary Kate right to withhold herself?
