The Reluctant Saint

1962 · Edward Dmytryk · Historical comedy-drama, saint biography

Recommended. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is the story of Saint Joseph of Cupertino, told with affection and laughter. Giuseppe has nothing the world prizes. He has humility, obedience and a childlike heart, and God lifts him up, quite literally. The film treats holiness as joyful. One reservation: a priest suspects possession and attempts an exorcism, which may puzzle younger children.

For parents

Good for children about eight and up with a parent, and for the whole family. Explain beforehand that the Church tests claimed miracles carefully, which is why Giuseppe is examined. Ask: why does God choose someone the world calls foolish? What is Giuseppe good at that others miss?
