The Wind in the Willows

1908 · Kenneth Grahame · Animal fantasy

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is a book about friendship and the love of home, and the prose is some of the best a child will hear. Rat, Mole and Badger correct a foolish friend and never give up on him. The one reservation is real. In one chapter the animals stand in awe before the pagan god Pan. A parent should frame that scene.

For parents

Read aloud from 6, independent reading from 10 or 11 because the vocabulary is hard. For the Pan chapter, say that the awe Rat and Mole feel is true and belongs to God alone (CCC 2112). Ask why Toad's friends keep helping him after he steals a car and lands in jail.
