Thérèse

1986 · Alain Cavalier · Biographical drama

Caution. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is a spare, beautiful film, and the Vatican listed it in 1995. It shows Therese in love with Jesus and giving herself away for others. It is for adults only. The director invents a nun with an unhealthy crush on Therese, adds dream images that mix martyrdom with rape fantasy, and never says whether her love comes from God. The film does not approve of the crush.

For parents

Adults only, per the bishops' A-III. Not for family saint night. Know first that Sister Lucie and her same-sex infatuation are invented, and that the film leaves grace an open question. Afterward read Story of a Soul and ask: did Therese's love come from God? What is the Little Way?
