Tomie dePaola's Favorite Nursery Tales

1986 · Tomie dePaola · Illustrated anthology of fairy tales, fables and poems

Recommended. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Here are the old tales every child should know, in one friendly volume. Hard work pays in The Little Red Hen. Truth beats flattery in The Emperor's New Clothes. A reader reports the rough edges are softened for little ones. One reservation: we could not check every tale, and softened endings can blunt the justice the originals teach.

For parents

Read aloud from 3. Independent reading from about 7. One tale a night works well. The magic is fairy-tale magic, with nothing to copy. Ask who told the truth in The Emperor's New Clothes and why it took a child. Ask why the Little Red Hen did not share.
