VeggieTales (series)
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 4+. A Catholic review of this show for parents.
Our review
Wholesome, funny, and genuinely reverent within its own rules: Jesus is never depicted as a vegetable and the veggies are never shown having a redemptive relationship with God. The gap is the one the creator himself confessed: ten years convincing kids to behave Christianly without teaching them Christianity. Virtue without grace, Scripture without the Church.
For parents
Safe to hand to little kids; the guidance is for the theology around it. VeggieTales teaches be-good-because-the-Bible-says. Catholic kids need the missing engine: we become good by grace, through the sacraments, prayer, and the Church that gives Scripture its meaning. Use the episodes as openings: after the Daniel story, tell them who delivers Daniel and why. And know your era: original videos have the Bible verses, the old NBC TV edits removed them.
