Where the Mountain Meets the Moon

2009 · Grace Lin · Children's fantasy drawn from Chinese folklore

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A lovely, kind book. Minli spends her one question on a friend instead of her own family, and the answer she finds is thankfulness. Her bitter mother learns gratitude and comes back to joy. Those are real lessons in charity and contentment. The reservation is the spiritual world: folk gods, a goddess, a restless spirit and an Old Man who writes everyone's fate are treated as real, so name that for children.

For parents

Read it aloud from 8; independent reading from 10, the Common Sense Media age. These are folktales, not faith. Fate is not written by an old man in the moon; God made us free and cares for us (CCC 302-303). Ask why Minli used her question for Dragon. Ask what changed Ma's heart.
