Wonder

2012 · R. J. Palacio · Middle-grade contemporary fiction

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A moving book about seeing past a face to a person. Auggie's courage, his parents' steady love and a few loyal friends make kindness look heroic, and many children come away changed. The reservation is the spiritual frame. God's face is mentioned and then blurred into a vague goodness, a friend believes in reincarnation, and God's name is misused a few times. Read it with your child and name the source of all kindness.

For parents

Read aloud from 9, independent reading from 10. Common Sense Media says 10 and up. The bullying is cruel and may upset sensitive readers. Ask who Auggie's true friends were and how they showed it. Ask what Mr. Tushman meant by the face of God, and tell them where we see it: in Christ and in every person.
